Happy Chickens

My garden does not look like this. I wish it did. In fact - its just the opposite of this. It has so many weeds that Brad and I are seriously contemplating hiring someone to come do it for us. We have been trying to spend time out there a little at a time - but I don't feel like we're getting anywhere. At least with the chickens - someone is finding joy in our weeds. Too bad they haven't figured out how to get to the garden yet.

Funny story from the weekend. Let me preface the funny by starting with - Our chickens are getting so big! So big in fact that I feel like they've been needing more space to run around in! So - we let them out to 'free range' the yard every day. And its been so fun to watch them run around the yard and chase each other - eat bugs and grass - and put themselves to bed at night. Probably the easiest pet I could have asked for to start me into the whole "we're pet people" part of life.

Anyway - so since the chickens have been getting bigger - I've been feeding them leftovers - fruits - and weeds that I've picked from around the yard. And they LOVE it. What can I say - I'd get tired of eating the same thing every day too.

So over the weekend - we watched some friends kids who wanted to help with the chickens. So we went to the backyard and I told Keegan to go get a snack for the chickens from the garden. And to just pick some weeds to bring over to them and Keegan says..........."Really? Your chickens eat weed?"

Yes. Yes they do.

Our chickens eat weed. With and S. And it makes them VERY happy!

Hey, I want chickens, too!

Have you guys tried raised bed gardening? I've been experimenting with it the past couple of years and it has cut my weeding time down to almost nothing. If you've never seen it, check out the book "Square Foot Gardening."
